VIC: Hospital in Melbourne s west to be upgraded

MELBOURNE, Feb 2 AAP - A hospital in Melbourne's fast-growing west is to receive $30
million in funding to upgrade its emergency department, operating theatres and intensive care.

Health Minister Rob Knowles said the extension of the Western Hospital in Sunshine was part
of the government's plan to move hospital services away from the inner city to growing
residential areas.

The population of Sunshine is expected to increase by 27 per cent by 2006.

The funding will provide 78 extra beds - eight in a new intensive care and coronary unit -
and allow the emergency department and radiology services to be expanded.
